What to Expect at Your First ABA Session
What actually happens at your child's first ABA therapy session, from the BCBA assessment to the first weeks. Warm, playful, and family-led.
If you’ve just scheduled your first ABA therapy session with Creative Care ABA, you may be feeling hopeful and a little nervous. That’s completely normal. A lot of parents come in expecting something clinical and rigid, and then they leave that first session surprised by how warm, playful, and relaxed it all felt.
Let’s talk about exactly what happens, because the unknown is almost always scarier than the reality.
Quick framing note: when we say “first session,” we’re talking about the first chapter of working with us. That’s actually a few visits stitched together: an initial conversation with you, time for our BCBA to meet your child, and then the first few low-pressure sessions where your child and their therapist get to know each other. Here’s what each piece feels like.
It Starts with a Conversation
The very first thing we do at Creative Care ABA is sit down and talk to you. Not about checklists or standardized scores. Those come later. About your child. What makes them laugh? What frustrates them? What does a hard morning look like in your house, and what does a good one look like? Engagement begins with dialogue.
You are the expert on your child. We bring the framework. That first conversation is where we start building a plan that actually fits your family, your child, and the way the days in your house already run.
The First Few Sessions Are Mostly About Trust
Here’s something parents are often surprised to hear: we’re not trying to teach your child anything in the first few sessions. We’re focused on one thing: building a real relationship.
Your child needs to feel safe and comfortable with their therapist before any meaningful learning can begin. So you might peek in and see them playing a board game, blowing bubbles, or just hanging out on the rug while the therapist follows your child’s lead. That’s intentional. That’s the foundation.
We don’t just build trust. We make it the groundwork.
You’ll Be Involved Every Step of the Way
ABA therapy doesn’t happen in a vacuum. The skills your child works on with us need to carry over into their day-to-day life. That means we’ll be checking in with you regularly, explaining what we’re working on and why, and giving you concrete strategies to try between sessions.
We want to work toward your goals for your child. It’s a partnership. The parents who see the biggest progress are the ones who feel confident reinforcing skills between sessions, and we work hard to make sure that’s you.
Progress Looks Different for Every Child
One of the most common things we say to families is this: your child is on their own timeline, and that timeline is valid. What matters isn’t the pace, it’s the progress.
What you can expect from us is consistency, data, and honest communication. Every session is supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). We track every session carefully and adjust the plan based on what we see. If something isn’t working, we change course. We don’t keep doing the same thing and hope for different results.
That first session really is just the beginning of getting to know your child, your family, and your goals.
